MID-WEEK Update!Dear Families, Thanks to a generous grant from Barrington Education Foundation, all 5th grade students will experience an immersive, hands-on learning STEAM course during the week of October 23. For five days, students will engage in a kinetic sculpture program based on curriculum from i2learning, an organization that works with schools to turn their classrooms into learning labs. The course consists of 20-25 hours of hands-on, project-based curriculum that integrates all of the regular subject areas. In this course, students will be introduced to key concepts and skills of kinetic sculpture, including balance, gearing, energy sources and design-oriented thinking. Course highlights include engineering automata, constructing a marble run and building mobiles. Students will use the work of Alexander Calder, George Rhodes, Anne Lilly and Arthur Ganson as examples of various forms of moving sculpture. Each day, they use the principles they learn as the basis for their own creations, and at the end of the week they’ll bring together their complete array of new skills to create a large-scale, chain-reaction-type work of art. Please be sure to ask your child about what s/he is learning each day. i2 Learning has partnered with over 20 of the world’s leading STEM organizations, including MIT, Stanford, MathWorks, and the American Museum of Natural History, to develop their hands-on courses. Please save Saturday, December 9 from 2:30pm – 4pm to view the students’ creations at BEF’s Extraordinary Teaching and Learning Student Showcase. Thank you, BEF, for this exciting learning opportunity! IMPORTANT: There will be photo and video documenting at this event. Barrington Education Foundation would like to use and publish pictures and videos in print and/or electronically for purposes consistent with its mission, including publicity, website content, and the Student Showcase on December 9, 2017.
