Dear Parents and/or Guardians, The Barrington Public Schools are focused on providing a world-class education, designed to meet the needs of all learners, and giving them opportunities to excel. Every year there are a handful of students who have demonstrated an inherent strength in mathematics. In other words, they are able to use their natural mathematical abilities to solve and reason with problems at first exposure, and have already mastered sixth grade skills. In order to meet their needs, we offer an opportunity to move ahead one grade level in math during their sixth grade year. On June 4, 2019 we will be offering an assessment to help determine whether students are developmentally and academically ready to begin the abstract concepts that make up much of the seventh grade curriculum. This is not a test that requires, or will benefit from, study and preparation. All students will be given the opportunity to take the assessment, however, it is not mandatory. If you would prefer not to have your child participate, please sign the parent/guardian section on the back page and return this letter to your child’s 5th grade teacher prior to June 3, 2019. It is important to understand that the assessment being offered is only one piece of data that we will be looking at to determine where a student is, in terms of mathematical maturity. Other data points will include common math benchmark assessments from the 5th grade school year, teacher feedback, and state standardized assessments. With the significant pressure our students are under today, it is critical that we use multiple measures to ensure students are academically and developmentally prepared to skip an entire year of instruction in mathematics. In order for a student to skip 6th grade math, they must meet criteria. For students who do not meet the criteria outlined in this letter, waivers to skip 6th grade math are not permissible. Regardless of the mathematical program your child will be enrolled in as a 6th grader, please be assured that they will be provided with a robust and rewarding mathematical education. If you have any questions, please contact Principal McGee at Hampden Meadows. Sincerely, Andrew Anderson, Ed.D. Principal Barrington Middle School I ___________________________ do not wish for my child __________________ to participate in (parent/guardian name) (child’s name) the above mentioned assessment used to determine if my child would be a candidate to skip 6th grade math. As a reminder, students who do not meet the criteria outlined in this letter will not be eligible for waiving to skip grade 6 math. ___________________________________ __________________________ (parent/guardian signature) (date)
